Drinagh NS got recognition as a health promoting school in October 2007. This is an HSE initiative to promote a healthy diet and active lifestyle among school children. We regularly hold health promoting days where they children prepare and sample various foods such as baking whole meal scones, making fruit salad, mixed vegetable salads and soups.
"Tùs maith, leath na hoibre"
A good start is always half the work. So what better way to start off the new school year than having a "healthy fortnight"
We hoped this would show the children healthy ways of having treats and to allow them to discover how easy making healthy food really is.
Our fortnight began with a day of fruit tasting. The 6th class children helped Mrs. O' Mahony to chop all the fruit and vegetables and under guidance created amazing fruit displays. Each class tasted a variety of tropical fruit e.g. pineapple, mango, pomegranate, kiwi, melon and passion fruit.

On Tuesday after "Wake up Shake up" in the yard the Infants, 1st, 2nd and 3rd class made tasty healthy smoothies. We have included the recipe should you wish to try it at home.
Everyone donned a high-viz vest on Wednesday and walked to school.
Dan O'Mahony (Tae Kwan Do instructor) visited the school the same day. Entertaining as ever he put us all through our paces for an hour. Even the Junior Infants survived.

4th, 5th and 6th classes made delicious yummy crustless quiche in the afternoon. A novel way to get children to eat eggs, peppers, mushrooms and onions. We all wished they had made more!!!
On Friday the senior classes once again made soup for the whole school using potatoes, carrots and onions from the school garden. Every bowl was licked clean.
The school borrowed the food pyramid from the HSE and each class learned about the importance of a healthy balanced diet.
