Drinagh School is implementing the Green School programme since 2006.  During this time we have earned three green flags and we are now working on getting our fourth.
In 2008 we were awarded our first green flag for our action on the reduction of litter and waste in the school and grounds. We learned to reduce, reuse and recycle.  Our green school code for this theme is “Don’t be sluggish, pick up your rubbish”

We began

·        Composting organic waste

·        Recycling all paper and plastic

·        We began litter patrol each day after lunch.

·        Competitions for tidy classrooms.

·        Photocopying both sides of paper.

Our second Green flag was awarded to us in 2010 for energy conservation.

Our code for this theme is “To be rich turn off the switch”

We did a huge amount of work to get this flag and this could not have been achieved without great support from our Board of Management.

·        We replaced our old draughty single glazed windows with new double glazed windows

·        We improved our loft insulation.

·        We insulated all the walls of the school.

·        We replaced all light bulbs with low energy bulbs.

·        Each classroom has energy monitors to make sure lights are turned off and doors kept closed.

Our third green flag was awarded in 2012 for water conservation.  Our  green code for this theme was “Be a good chap and turn off the tap”.

·        We installed a water butt to collect rain water for the garden.

·        We studied water conservation during science in all classes.

·        We carried out home surveys on water consumption.

·        We installed short flush in the toilets and changed the taps to conserve water.

We earned out 4th green flag.  The theme was transport and we are raising awareness of the need for sustainable travel. Our green code for this theme is “Stop your talking. Lets go walking”.

We are currently working towards getting out 5th green flag.  The theme is bio-diversity. Working on this flag  looks at steps which can be taken to increase awareness of the importance of native plants, animals and habitats.
